Case Study Edwards & Company and The Lyric Theatre

  • summer school sponsorship
  • match funding from Arts & Business
  • voice coaching for lawyers from Royal Shakespeare Company
  • redefined young offenders’ perception of lawyers
  • employees brought closer together
  • measurable improvements for business

Some arts and business collaborations prove to be truly transformative for all concerned. That’s just what happened when the winner of the Allianz Arts & Business NI Employee Engagement Award 2016 Edwards & Company Solicitors joined forces with Belfast’s Lyric Theatre.

The association began back in early 2014 when Philip Crawford, head of creative learning at Lyric Theatre, persuaded his sister Dorcas Crawford, a senior partner at Edwards & Company Solicitors, to sponsor the theatre’s upcoming summer school.

Edwards & Company’s initial sponsorship of the Lyric Theatre’s summer school involved the company providing bursaries, t-shirts and certificates for the young participants. This sponsorship was matched by investment from Arts & Business NI.

The summer school sponsorship brought a number of the firm’s staff into contact with Michael Corbidge of the Royal Shakespeare Company, a renowned voice coach who runs courses for lawyers on argument and rhetoric in Shakespeare’s texts. Corbidge provided expert tuition exploring vocal techniques relevant to practising lawyers which proved beneficial to all the solicitors who attended.
